Kindergarten transition
At Adamstown Public School, we understand how important the start of school is for both children and families. Our transition to school program is designed to create a warm, caring, and positive environment where every child can grow and succeed. We focus on making sure that you and your child feel welcomed, supported, and confident as you move from pre-school to kindergarten.
Our Building Blocks program gives children and families the chance to get to know the school community, make connections, and feel like they truly belong. We involve children in their own transition, helping them become comfortable and excited about starting school.
We also believe that working together with families is key to a smooth and positive start. We welcome you with open arms and respect your knowledge of your child. We know that feeling part of the school community is very important as your child takes this big step from the familiar to something new.
Read the Getting ready for primary school guide for detailed tips and checklists.
Before your child starts Kindergarten
Preschool visits
Adamstown Public School Staff visit various local preschools and child care centres to present to families about school readiness. APS Kindergarten teachers also team teach at various centres to build relationships with students enrolled for our school in the following year.
Kindergarten orientation and school tours
At Adamstown Public School our orientation program runs from May to November each year.
Our orientation sessions help children:
- meet teachers and classmates
- explore classrooms and playgrounds
- practise simple routines
Building Blocks
Our Building Blocks program is a fun and welcoming way for children starting Kindergarten in 2026 to get to know our school. Sessions include music, storytelling, craft and play-based activities that help children feel confident and connected before their first big day. Our Building Blocks Programs runs every week starting Term 2 through to the end of the year.

What to expect in Kindergarten
Learning and development
Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.
Daily routines
Children learn routines such as morning arrival, snack and lunch breaks, lining up, using bubblers and moving safely around the school. Teachers guide children as they settle in, but practising at home helps.
Best Start Assessment
At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
